About The Author

Welcome to Vital Vocation!  I’m Brian Cormack Carr, a writer and coach and chief executive of BVSC, The Centre for Voluntary Action.

In addition to being the author of How To Find Your Vital Vocation, I have written for CareershiftersThe Coaching Academy Blog and the Guardian’s Voluntary Sector Network blog, and I’m a founding editor and contributor to Paleo Diet News.

I trained in personnel management with Marks & Spencer plc and now have nearly 20 years experience in the fields of personal development an leadership.

On the path to my own Vital Vocation, I have experienced a wide range of interesting (and challenging) jobs, with time spent as: a residential social worker in a care home for yound adults with challenging behaviours; a plastic bus stop shelter maker; a courier and laboratory technician for a granary and brewery; a door-to-door salesman; and an ironmonger’s shop assistant.  I remember each one as a privilege – and an education!

I even tried my hand (as a student) at selling double glazing through telesales – but I only lasted on day after being tormented by guilt and calling all of my prospects back to thell them that they weren’t actually obliged to buy anything. My boss wasn’t very pleased. I’ve since chalked that one up to experience.
